Community Week brings together students and staff from across the College to engage in social action projects which give back to the local community.
This week serves as a valuable opportunity for students to apply the skills they’ve learnt and are continuing to develop, whilst completing a project to help others in and around the community.
Here’s a glimpse of the work the College has been involved in throughout this week:
Inclusive Learning Community Coffee Morning
Students from our Inclusive Learning department assisted with the organisation and running of the Community Coffee Morning. This event was created for local employers and our key stakeholders to network with staff and students.

Students assisted our Catering department to create some of the delicious cakes on offer and helped set up the venue by folding napkins and arranging the tables.
Some of our friendly students were also on ‘door duty’, welcoming and directing all visitors with a big smile.
Catering Supporting the Community Coffee Morning
Catering students provided lots of delectable treats for the Community Coffee Morning, these included chocolate brownies, lemon meringue pie, coffee and walnut cake and Viennese whirls.
This event gave them the perfect opportunity to hone their skills in the kitchen, whilst gaining experience working to a brief and a deadline.
Students were tasked with sanding down cubes of Biochar and drilling large holes that will be filled with compost and seeds.

Construction and Built Environment Tree Planting with The Churchill School
23 Year 5 pupils from The Churchill School visited the College to plant a variety of trees and shrubs across the campus, contributing to a sustainability project.
David Cook, Skills Practitioner, explained: “We’ve involved various student groups in preparing the area.
“We are creating a mixed English wildlife hedge, which will enhance biodiversity on campus and support our sustainability efforts. It will also help reduce flooding.”

Working alongside staff and students from our Construction and Built Environment department, it was a real team effort with our students digging holes, erecting green mesh fencing and positioning the trees before the school children could begin planting.

Miss Batchelor, from The Churchill School, said: “Today has been an amazing experience. If the children return to the College in years to come, they’ll be able to look at these trees and remember that they planted them.
“Not many children get the chance to plant a tree, so it’s great for creating memories. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for them to see the facilities at such a young age.”

The Joinery students worked alongside the pupils, offering guidance and ensuring the trees were well-watered after planting. Ethan, a Level 2 Furniture Manufacturing student, said: “It’s nice helping out and teaching the children new skills.”
